Shawn Mendes explained Greg James at BBC Radio 1 Breakfast on the 31st of March, 2022, “I wrote this a couple, like a month after Camila and I split up. It’s interesting, because I think after you get over, like, the shock, of just like ‘Wow, I’m not gonna see that person every day,’ comes in the way that you realise you were relying on that person. And for me, Camila was a lot of my support system, and kind of realising ‘OK, I’ve gotta be there and cope by myself and for myself,’ and a lot of that just came through in the song, and… a lot of that is very true to me, and it feels right.”

The singer debuted this song live early in March of 2022 at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas. He co-wrote it with Jonah Shy and Scott Harris and co-produced with Jonah Shy.

Jay Martin, responsible for videos for “It’ll Be Okay”, “Mercy”, and “Stitches”, created the official music video for “When You’re Gone”, which was filmed during rehearsing in Toronto, Canada.
